I Drink a Lot of Tea/Soda/Etc. Isn’t That as Good as Water?

Howdy friends, family, foes, fiends, and all you funky folks!

Let’s talk about the topic of the week, hydration, shall we? Specifically, let’s talk about how I’ve been trying hard to convince myself that my daily intake of tea, soda, and whatever else I can get my hands on is totally as good as drinking plain old water. Here’s the spoiler alert: it’s absolutely not. But hey, a guy can dream, right? (My loving Mother swore her doctor told her soda was as good as water, because it contained water…. B.S., sorry Mom.)

I mean, I’m not dehydrated. I’m drinking something all day long — diet soda with breakfast, Crystal Light peach tea all day long in my mossy tumbler, and with lunch, maybe a coffee in the afternoon, and a glass of iced tea for dinner. That’s like… 96 oz of drinks a day. Surely that counts for something, right? Well, as it turns out, not so much. (Damn!)

So, let’s look into the nitty-gritty of why water is the MVP of hydration, why my beloved tea and soda don’t quite cut it, and how I’m trying to do better (without giving up my favorite beverages entirely).
