I’ve Gotten Into A Bad Blue Funk, How Do I Get Over It?

Hi, all my family, friends, fiends, foes and funky folks!

Dean Benson, the self-proclaimed “Dean of Rock & Roll” here at my computer, in my office, thinking. Now, I’m usually the guy telling you to crank the volume to eleven or twelve, live life loud, and never let anyone get you down. But I’ve got to be real with you today. I’m human, (dammit). And lately, I’ve been in one. A real bad blue funk.

You know the stupid, yuck feeling. It’s not quite depression, but it’s a heavy, grey blanket that just sits on your soul. You wake up tired or with a headache/or whatever. The passion for the things you usually love — music, old cars, digital projects, even just getting out of the house — feels muted, like a great song playing through blown-out speakers. You’re going through the motions, but the fire is just…barely embers.

Maybe it’s the constant barrage of bad news, maybe it’s a project that’s stalled, or maybe it’s just one of those cycles life throws at you. For me, it’s a combination of things. I kind of feel stuck in a rut, creatively and professionally, which may partly be the fact that my 67th birthday is just about here. The real world can be a grind, even though I love what I do and where I work. But, sometimes the music in my heart gets drowned out by the noise.
