“Just Get Out of the Way, I Can Do It Faster”

Growing up, there were certain phrases I heard so often that they became part of the soundtrack of my childhood. One of those was my dad’s go-to line: “Just get out of the way, I can do it faster.” It wasn’t just a saying; it was his mantra, a snapshot of how he approached life, work, and family. This blog is a tribute to the man who, through his words and actions, taught me invaluable lessons about efficiency, self-reliance, and doing things right the first time.

A Man of Action

I always thought Dad didn’t either like me or was too impatient to teach me anything. BUT, he did. I learned by watching the fastest and most efficient way to do whatever he was doing. I remember vividly, one day, I had my little go-cart up on sawhorses, working on it trying to get it to start. It was hopeless, something in that old 5 horsepower Briggs & Stratton lawnmower engine just wouldn’t run. Dad was exasperated, just getting home from a 12 hour day at work, did not want to put time in the “damned go-cart”. But in my juvenile way, I badgered him till he helped me. He quickly figured out that the engine had a carburetor that was clogged up, sprayed carb cleaner in it, and bam, it was going, but not without making me feel small for not seeing it myself.
