My Dear Old Dad Used To Say, “Be Very Careful With Booze, It Will Get Hold Of You And Not Let Go!”
Howdy, friends, family, fiends, foes, and funky folks! Today, I’m worming my way deep into a subject that’s near and dear to my heart: the wisdom of my dear old Dad. If you’ve been reading my blog, you know that my Dad had a saying for just about everything. But one that has always stuck with me is his cautionary advice: “Be very careful with booze. It will get ahold of you and not let go!”
The Wisdom of Dad’s Experience
My dad wasn’t just blowing smoke when he said this; he spoke from experience and observation. Growing up, I saw firsthand the effects of alcohol on people around us. Dad had seen it all — friends who went down a dark path, family members who struggled with binge drinking, and addiction, but he never let it get to him, personally. His brothers would go on rampant 3 or 5 day binges, hide the bottles in a shed in their home, get arrested or almost, etc. His advice was always wrapped in a story, a bit of humor, and a whole lot of love. (Thanks, Dad, it worked, I don’t overindulge to this day, but I had to learn the hard way a couple of times.)
