Didja ever had one of those nights where your brain just won’t shut off? You’re lying there, staring at the ceiling, while your thoughts race like a Suzuki Cyclone 400 motocross bike at full throttle, (yes, it’s a really old reference). Work stress, personal B.S and drama, random song lyrics, or that awkward thing you said in 1983 — it all floods in the second your head hits the pillow. (SUX don’t it?)

I’ve been there. Many, many awful times. And over the years, I’ve picked up some tricks to quiet the stupid mental noise and actually get some shut-eye. So, if you’re tired of counting sheep (who even came up with that stupid stuff?), here are some real, practical ways to calm your mind and drift off to dreamland.

1. The “Brain Dump” Journaling Method

One of the best ways to stop overthinking is to get it all out of your head. Keep a notebook by your bed (or use your phone’s notes app) and spend 5–10 minutes writing down everything swirling around in your oh so tired mind.

  • What to do:
  • Jot down tasks that need to be done for tomorrow.
  • Vent about all your frustrations.
