Howdy, friends, family, foes, fiends and funky folks! Dean Benson here, back on the blog to throw an idea that’s been brewing in my mind like a pot of cheap coffee. Now, if you’ve been around long enough to remember the CB radio craze of the mid-70s, you might just get a kick out of this one. And if you’re scratching your head wondering what CB radios even are, don’t worry. Sit back, relax, and let’s take a trip down back to understand why the internet today is starting to look a lot like those CB radio days.

The Good Ol’ Days of CB Radios

Let’s set the stage: it’s the mid-70s, bell bottoms are in, classic rock is reigning supreme, and out on the highways and byways, something big is happening. Citizens Band (CB) radio, originally meant for truckers and emergency services, suddenly becomes the coolest thing since sliced bread. Everyone and their mother is slapping a CB radio in their car and coming up with a handle (that’s CB lingo for a nickname, folks).

People are chatting up a storm on these radios, sharing everything from traffic updates to jokes, and even making new friends. It was the social media of its time — but instead of Wi-Fi, you had an antenna, and instead of emojis, you had your voice and a colorful vocabulary of CB lingo…
